Key to McCartney's Childhood Home Sells at Auction
The brass Yale key sold for three times its estimate, and it came with a handwritten letter and period photograph tied to Beatles history.
A brass Yale key to Sir Paul McCartney's childhood home at 20 Forthlin Road sold for £6,100 on Wednesday at Dominic Winter Auctioneers, tripling its pre-sale estimate of £2,000 to £3,000.
In 1965, 13-year-old American fan Kathleen Salt wrote to the Liverpool occupant; then-resident Ashley Jones sent Salt the key and a house photograph in response.
Four Beatles autographs inscribed to 'Kathy' also sold for £5,124, items collected by Frank Duffy during the band's 1964 American tour when he worked security.
Dominic Winter Auctioneers director Chris Albury said the competition demonstrates "the Beatles' popularity remains as strong as ever," reflecting deep personal links to the band's history.
Owned by the National Trust since 1995, 20 Forthlin Road remains open for public tours, preserving where Sir Paul McCartney lived until 1963 and early Beatles classics were developed.
