Keralam Drafts Bill to Improve Geriatric Care
The bill would create state and district monitoring systems and a caregiver certification framework, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan chaired a high-level meeting to review the draft Keralam State Elderly Persons Bill, which ensures care, welfare, dignity, and rights for the elderly in the State.
- Against the backdrop of changing demographics, the Bill aims to promote healthy and active ageing while facilitating the elderly's stay in their own homes within a familial environment and ensuring safe, quality care when needed.
- The Bill envisages State-and-district-level mechanisms for implementation, monitoring, and grievance redressal, including provisions for digital-financial safety and quality services for elderly care centres, assisted living facilities, and day care centres called Pakal Veedu.
- One thrust area is transforming the care sector into a professional set-up; the State proposes a Kerala Geriatric Care Certification Framework creating a State-level registry for trained caregivers to ensure quality and generate new job opportunities.
- The State will complete procedures for the Bill soon to prioritize development of a silver economy, linking elderly needs with financial and job opportunities while building a sustainable elder-care sector.
