Rwanda, Kenya Sign Deal for Petroleum Importation Through Northern Corridor
The deal will move more Rwanda-bound fuel through Kenyan storage and pipeline systems, with the first cargo set to arrive in early September.
- On Monday, Kenya and Rwanda signed a government-to-government agreement to facilitate Rwandan fuel imports via the Northern Corridor transit route. The pacts include a memorandum of understanding, a tripartite agreement, and a transport and storage agreement.
- Landlocked Rwanda currently imports petroleum products through Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. The new arrangement shifts a greater share of imports to the Mombasa route to enhance fuel security and reduce logistical bottlenecks.
- Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Industry Antoine Marie Kajangwe oversaw the signing, with Wandayi stating, "Today, I signed an MoU between Kenya and Rwanda to facilitate the importation of refined petroleum products for Rwanda through Kenya's Northern Corridor transit route."
- The Trade Ministry stated, "This will enable Rwanda to source its bulk petroleum products using Kenya's infrastructure for transportation and storage." The Kenya Pipeline Company and Rwanda National Energy Company will implement the deal.
- KPC expects the first cargo under this partnership to arrive at Mombasa between September 4 and September 6 to launch operations. The deal supports Rwanda's strategy to strengthen fuel security and advance regional economic integration.
