Kent man wanted by FBI for fraud caught in India
Authorities say Bedi pocketed at least $600,000 by exchanging SNAP benefits for cash before fleeing to India.
- On Friday, Manjit Singh Bedi is scheduled to appear in a Tacoma courtroom after federal agents returned him to the United States on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, following his arrest in India.
- Bedi fled to his native India within a week of pleading not guilty in April to wire fraud and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefit fraud, charges punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
- According to the indictment, Bedi charged $200 against recipient EBT cards between 2024 and 2025, keeping $100 as profit while providing $100 in cash, totaling at least $600,000 in fraudulent SNAP benefits.
- FBI Director Kash Patel said the arrest "marks yet another significant moment for the historic FBI's Most Wanted Fraudsters program," noting over 260 removal actions in 20 months, up approximately 70 per cent from the previous period.
- Acting U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd stated prosecutors will ask the court to detain Bedi pending trial, arguing he demonstrated the will and means to flee after violating his initial release conditions.
