Douglass Breaks 50m Free World Record at Indy Pro Swim
A versatile swimmer known for longer distances, Kate Douglass stunned with a 23.59-second 50m freestyle world record, surpassing Sarah Sjostrom's mark and her own expectations.
On Friday, Kate Douglass broke the 50-meter freestyle world record at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, finishing in 23.59 seconds.
Douglass sliced two-hundredths of a second off the 23.61 mark set by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom in July 2023, surpassing her personal best of 23.91 shared with Gretchen Walsh.
Powering past Walsh in the final 15 meters, Douglass secured victory at the Indiana University Natatorium, with Walsh second in 23.78 and Anna Moesch third in 24.30.
Douglass told NBC Sports, "I think I'm still in shock," adding the time was "a lot faster than I ever thought I would go tonight-- or ever."
The 24-year-old from Pelham, New York, is a five-time Olympic medalist who had already won the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke at this meet.
