Chuck Schumer Has Broad Support From His Caucus, but Midterms Could Decide His Future as Leader
Democratic senators say his standing has improved, but several warn that losses in November could trigger a leadership challenge.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has regained political standing within his Democratic caucus ahead of midterm elections, though some candidates publicly state they will not support him for another leadership term.
Attitudes within the Democratic caucus have improved since 2025, when the party base revolted against Schumer for voting to keep President Donald Trump's government open in a March vote.
Freshman Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan has called for a 'new generation' of leaders, stating that Democrats 'haven't totally found their footing after Trump' in a recent interview.
Colleagues expect Schumer to easily win leadership support if Democrats gain seats in the election, though that could quickly change if the party suffers unexpected losses.
MoveOn spokesman Joel Payne said the group's members have 'already rendered a judgment on Schumer's tenure,' while other senators are reportedly eyeing potential runs for the White House in 2028.
