Kansas Lands Purdue Transfer Trey Kaufman-Renn in a Late Boost Before the Start of the Season
On Monday, the Kansas Jayhawks announced the signing of former Purdue star Trey Kaufman-Renn. The 24-year-old forward has enrolled in classes and begun practicing with the team.
A court injunction granted earlier this month allows Kaufman-Renn to pursue a sixth year of eligibility. He argued he would not have used his redshirt season under the NCAA's new age-based rules.
The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds last season at Purdue. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected him 59th overall in June's NBA Draft, but he did not sign a contract.
Head coach Bill Self said Kaufman-Renn has been "extremely well-drilled and well-coached," anticipating a quick transition. The addition fills a roster need after freshman Grant Mordini suffered a season-ending injury last month.
While currently eligible, Kaufman-Renn's status remains subject to future court rulings, similar to teammates Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White. The NCAA retains the right to appeal the preliminary injunction within 30 days.
