Jim Colbert, Eight-Time Winner on the PGA Tour, Dies at 85
Colbert won 8 PGA Tour titles and 20 Champions Tour events, and his bucket hat became his trademark after doctors urged him to wear one.
Jim Colbert, a renowned PGA Tour golfer known for his signature bucket hat, died on Sunday at age 85, the PGA Tour announced. He won eight PGA Tour titles and 20 championships on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.
Born in New Jersey, Colbert attended Kansas State University on a football scholarship but shifted to golf following an injury. He finished runner-up at the 1964 NCAA Championship before turning professional in 1965.
Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas, opened in 2000 and is ranked by Golfweek as the best public course in Kansas. His management company, Jim Colbert Golf, operated 23 courses with gross revenue of $50 million.
Former Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder said, "He never failed to step up to help when he was in a position to help his community." Athletics Director Gene Taylor added, "We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Colbert."
Constantly adorned in his signature bucket hat, Colbert served as an ESPN golf analyst from 1987 to 1990 and was inducted into the Kansas State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. His legacy extends across golf and Kansas State communities.
