Investigators deliver report on why Iranian warships took part in naval drills off South Africa
The panel’s findings stay confidential as Ramaphosa weighs recommendations after concerns that Iran’s navy was barred from the exercise.
On Tuesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received a secret report investigating why Iranian warships participated in the 'Will of Peace 2026' naval exercises despite his explicit instructions.
Ramaphosa previously ordered that Iranian vessels not participate to avoid diplomatic fallout with the USA, yet the directive was allegedly disregarded during the Chinese-led Exercise Will.
Justice Ngoepe chaired the independent investigation panel, which examined whether high-ranking armed forces members or Defense Ministry officials ignored the president's instruction.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the report remains confidential due to national security, with the president currently processing the findings and recommendations.
The exercise occurred amid heightened USA-Iran tensions, and South Africa's foreign policy within the BRICS bloc has drawn criticism as the USA views it as a geopolitical challenge.
