Judge complicates construction timeline on Trump’s memorial arch project with multiple deadlines
On Monday, District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued strict notification requirements, complicating President Donald Trump's timeline for the proposed memorial arch in Washington. The order mandates multiple court alerts before any construction begins.
Detailed in an Oct plan, the memorial arch features a massive structure more than 12 stories high with an observation deck, an occupied roof, and a bronze Lady Liberty statue with wings carrying a torch.
Chutkan mandated that the National Park Service and Interior Department provide 14 days' notice before construction, while requiring notification within thirty minutes of any preparatory work at Memorial Circle. Defendants face strict oversight.
The administration must notify the court within an hour of any Planning Commission decision, as the court reiterated that construction without proper notice "would be a violation of the court." Delays are now assured.
Pending regulatory approvals, the National Park Service identified Nov 5, 2026, as the earliest possible date for construction, though ongoing lawsuits from Vietnam veterans, The District, and Virginia create legal uncertainty ahead.
