Power outage halts Tokyo commuter train lines, affecting 673,000 passengers

The outage disrupted services on two of Tokyo's busiest lines, stranding thousands and causing evacuations; five passengers were hospitalized, JR East said.

  • On Friday, East Japan Railway Company said all services on the Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines were suspended, causing major transit disruption and stranding thousands of commuters during the morning rush.
  • Railway staff first discovered the outage shortly before 4 a.m., attributing it to a substation power transfer attempt, while a fire near Tamachi Station at about 8 a.m. is under investigation.
  • The Keihin-Tohoku Line briefly resumed around 7 a.m. but was suspended again, while firefighters and rail staff evacuated stranded passengers and five people were taken to hospital.
