JORDAN ROSSI — HOMECOMING: When Portraiture Becomes Identity

During Milan Fashion Week, Jordan Rossi arrives in Italy for the first time with HOMECOMING his first major solo exhibition in the country, presented at Galleria Rubin in Milan. The exhibition takes on an especially personal meaning as Rossi, of Italian-Irish heritage, symbolically returns to his roots. HOMECOMING is part of the official calendar of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. A photographer and film director working between London and Los Angeles, Rossi belongs to a new generation of image-makers for whom fashion, art and culture are no longer separate worlds. His work moves across fashion, celebrity culture, music, queer culture and social commentary, creating images that go beyond simply portraying a person to explore who they really are. “What does it mean when a person decides, fully and without apology, to be exactly who they are?” This question runs through Rossi’s practice, rooted in his personal experience and in his work with his own community. For him, representation is first and foremost a tool for visibility and change. Portraiture is at the heart of his practice. Rossi has photographed some of the most visible figures in contemporary culture — including Nicholas Galitzine, Lashana Lynch, Rickey Thompson, Caleb McLaughlin and Finn Wolfhard — looking for the moment when a person stops performing their public persona. “The most powerful portrait is created not when the subject performs for the camera, but when they forget about it,” Rossi explains. Fame becomes a kind of armour that can be temporarily removed, allowing vulnerability, authenticity and individuality to emerge. His visual language is immediately recognisable: colour, graphic compositions and a strong cinematic sensibility come together with an ongoing reflection on identity, representation and social change. His images occupy a space between fashion photography, contemporary art and visual activism. Rossi’s work transforms portraits of celebrities, musicians and figures from queer culture into “a visual archive of a generation redefining identity, gender and representation.HOMECOMING is therefore more than an exhibition. It reflects the way a new generation is redefining ideas of gender, beauty, masculinity and identity. Rossi does not simply photograph a generation — he documents its transformation.
