DeLuca’s 2-Run Single in the 7th Inning Lifts the Rays to a 7-6 Win over the Orioles
Jonny DeLuca’s seventh-inning single capped a Rays rally after three Baltimore homers, and Tampa Bay won 7-6 to avoid a four-game sweep.
On Monday in St. Petersburg, pinch-hitter Jonny DeLuca delivered a go-ahead, two-run single during a three-run seventh-inning rally as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-6, avoiding a four-game sweep at Tropicana Field.
Reinstated Monday from the injured list, Rays starter Shane McClanahan yielded three runs over 3 1/3 innings in his first outing since July 30. Both teams traded leads throughout the contest, with Baltimore's Coby Mayo, Pete Alonso, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand each hitting home runs.
Yandy Diaz, Ryan Vilade, and Jorge Mateo also homered for Tampa Bay, keeping the game competitive before the seventh-inning surge. Baltimore starter Brandon Young allowed four runs on eight hits across four innings, including three home runs.
Left-Hander Cam Booser earned his first win in a Rays uniform after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings. All-Star Bryan Baker subsequently secured his majors-leading 35th save, retiring the final five batters to preserve the one-run victory.
The Orioles return to Camden Yards on Tuesday to face the New York Yankees, while Tampa Bay hosts Toronto. RHP Nick Martinez takes the mound for the Rays, carrying a 12-3 record into his next start.
