John Tibbits retires as president of Conestoga College, effective immediately
John Tibbits retires after nearly 40 years amid controversy including layoffs and 1,579% growth in international student enrolment, with interim leadership now in place.
On January 14, John Tibbits, President of Conestoga College, retired effective immediately and informed the Board of Governors and campus community by email.
Unions and staff say their sustained pressure preceded John Tibbits' resignation, citing issues like international enrolment growth and housing scarcity, according to Leopold Koff.
Union statements pointed to recent layoffs totaling 181 full-time faculty and 197 support staff, with reports of another 400 lay-offs at the end of December and John Tibbits' 29 per cent pay rise to $636,102.
Norma McDonald Ewing will serve as interim president, while the Board of Governors hired a consultant for an executive search and Chair Martha George thanked Tibbits.
This is the college's first leadership change in nearly 40 years since 1987; Tibbits left before his contract extended to 2026, amid calls for Conestoga College Board of Governors transparency.
