Former Dallas Cowboy John Niland Has Died
He was a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro who helped Dallas win its first Super Bowl, family said.
John Niland, a three-time All-Pro guard who helped the Dallas Cowboys win their first Super Bowl, died Saturday at age 82. His daughter, Haven, confirmed the death in McKinney, a Dallas suburb.
Over nine seasons with the Cowboys, Niland made 111 starts in 124 games while earning six consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1968 to 1973 and first-team All-Pro honors in 1969, 1971 and 1972.
Protecting quarterback Roger Staubach, Niland helped Dallas defeat the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in the Super Bowl on Jan. 16, 1972. This victory marked the franchise's first championship title.
A Massachusetts native, Niland starred at Iowa before the Cowboys selected him in the 1966 draft. He was inducted into the Hawkeyes' Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
Niland is survived by Shaughn, his wife of more than 30 years, and his daughters, Jordan and Haven. He played one season for Philadelphia before retiring after the 1975 season.
