John Legend on Pharrell’s Musical Push, Jay-Z’s Praise and New Creative Challenges with ‘Muse’
The 16-track project marks Legend’s first full album with Pharrell Williams after 20 years of friendship and features a more conversational vocal style.
John Legend releases Muse on Friday, a 16-track album marking his first full collaboration with Pharrell Williams after more than 20 years of friendship.
Recorded mostly at Louis Vuitton's Paris headquarters, the project grew from Legend's appearance on Clipse's The Birds Don't Sing, which inspired Williams to build an album around the singer's voice.
Legend adopts a conversational delivery on several tracks at Williams' urging, departing from his signature piano ballads. "Some of the delivery of the verses of the song is more like I'm orating," Legend said.
Beyond the album, Legend is composing his first original stage score for Imitation of Life, a new musical opening at The Shed in New York.
Now a free agent with Republic Records, the EGOT winner seeks to avoid complacency through new creative challenges. "I really want every project to be my best project," Legend said.
