John Deere Agrees to Pay $99M in Right-to-Repair Settlement

The preliminary deal would fund payouts to farmers and require Deere to expand access to software and diagnostic tools for 10 years.

  • On Monday, agricultural manufacturer John Deere agreed to a $99 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit accusing the company of restricting repair access to its tractors and farming equipment.
  • Plaintiffs alleged that John Deere restricted access to diagnostic tools and software, forcing Customers to rely exclusively on John Deere-approved specialists who charged artificially inflated repair prices.
  • This Settlement requires John Deere to provide diagnostic tools and software for independent repairs, with offline capabilities available by December 31, 2026, while approximately 200,000 Customers will share the $99 million payout.
  • Counsel described the agreement as an "excellent result for the Class" in District Court documents, while Denver Caldwell, vice president of aftermarket and customer support at John Deere, said the company is "pleased that this resolution allows us to move forward."
  • Beyond this case, the Federal Trade Commission and states including Illinois and Minnesota filed a similar lawsuit in January 2025 currently in discovery; Repair advocates supporting Iowa legislative proposals saw a bill pass the Iowa House Agriculture Committee 18-5 in February.
