John Deere to Close Ottumwa, Iowa Plant in Fiscal Year 2028

The company said the closures and production shifts will preserve U.S. manufacturing capacity while aligning output with regional customer demand.

  • On Wednesday, John Deere announced it will close its Ottumwa and Clarion, Iowa, factories over the next two fiscal years, relocating production to Des Moines, Louisiana, and Paton to "optimize" manufacturing and "improve operational efficiency."
  • Deere is currently operating "far below normal production volumes due to the downturn in the ag economy," prompting the company to streamline its manufacturing footprint and align capacity with customer demand.
  • A company spokesperson said approximately 300 employees would be impacted by closures at normal production volumes. The John Deere Foundation has "affirmed" a commitment of nearly $1 million to support Ottumwa and Clarion over three years.
  • Additionally, Deere will move sugar cane harvester production from Thibodaux, Louisiana, to Catalão, Brazil, by fiscal year 2029, with affected workers receiving transition support including retraining and relocation assistance.
  • Last week, Deere announced it was calling back 275 workers to its Waterloo, Iowa, operations and hiring 400 more across eastern Iowa. The manufacturer stated it will manage transitions carefully to maintain product quality and service.
