Jet2, easyJet, TUI Passengers Warned of '14 Day Rule' Change for Flights
The Department for Transport says the change could reduce last-minute cancellations and cut wasted fuel as airlines face summer disruption.
- The Department is seeking feedback on plans to relax the 14-day rule, allowing airlines to consolidate passengers onto fewer aircraft amid uncertainty regarding jet fuel supplies caused by the Middle East crisis.
- With jet fuel supplies under pressure, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the legislation aims to give families "long-term certainty" and allow airlines to adjust flights in good time to avoid disruption.
- Consumer experts warned that passengers currently benefit from a 14-day rule, and it's "not fair" for travellers to be moved at the last minute to accommodate airlines without compensation.
- Operators including British Airways, Ryanair, Jet2, TUI, and Wizz Air could combine flights under the proposal. The Conservatives claim it could result in passengers being "herded on to a different plane, at a time of the airline's choosing."
- Rob Bishton, Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority, said passengers are "well protected by some of the strongest rights in the world." In significant delays of 2 hours for short-haul, 3 hours for medium-haul, and 4 hours for long-haul, travellers receive care and assistance.
