Jeremy Clarkson remembers Hollywood 'nice guy' with Top Gear tale after death
Clarkson said Stewart arrived so early on Top Gear that staff mistook him for a delivery driver before he became the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.
Sir Patrick Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, aged 86, ending a career that made him an icon of Star Trek and the X-Men film franchise.
The actor enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades across theatre, television, and film, receiving numerous honours including Laurence Olivier Awards, a Grammy Award, and nominations for the Emmys, Golden Globes, and a Tony Award.
Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson recalled Stewart's appearance on the show, where the actor arrived so early he was mistaken for a delivery driver and replied, "But I'm the captain of the Enterprise."
William Shatner said Stewart brought "intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did," while Sir Ian McKellen called him "the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic."
His family said he died following a "brief and poignant journey" with Alzheimer disease and Lewy body dementia, surrounded by loved ones with "live music, prayer, tears, laughter" during his final days.
