Japan Digital Agency Says 246,000 Records May Have Leaked in Cyberattack
An outside attacker exploited a VPN flaw and may have accessed names, email addresses and phone numbers, the agency said.
- On Friday, Sept. 11, Japan's Digital Agency disclosed a cyberattack potentially exposing personal information for approximately 246,000 public servants, contractors, and others involved in government work.
- The Digital Agency detected unusual activity on June 25, later determining an outside attacker exploited a VPN vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to government files.
- Exposed files contained approximately 236,000 names and 231,000 email addresses, though the agency confirmed that identification numbers, bank account details, and pension records were not compromised.
- Officials are working to identify affected individuals to contact them individually, warning that exposed contact details could facilitate phishing attempts, though no secondary misuse has been confirmed.
- Following the investigation, the agency plans to improve external connection security as National Police Agency figures show 123 ransomware attacks recorded in Japan during the first half of 2026.
