Japan: Five-Year-Old Boy Dies After Getting Caught in Ski Travelator
The travelator's automatic safety stop failed, and rescue took 40 minutes; the ski resort is investigating potential negligence and reviewing safety protocols.
- On Sunday, Hinata Goto, a 5-year-old boy, died after an accident on an outdoor travelator at Asari Ski Resort in Otaru, Hokkaido, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
- While stepping off the travelator, the boy fell and his right arm was caught in the belt's turning section, but the automatic safety mechanism did not activate and no staff were nearby.
- Shortly after 10 a.m., the boy's mother called emergency services, pressed the emergency stop, and rescue workers spent about 40 minutes dismantling the travelator to free Hinata Goto, who was unconscious when freed and taken to hospital.
- Hokkaido police have opened an inquiry into whether negligence played a role, and Asari/Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort apologised, said it is cooperating and reviewing safety procedures while remaining open.
- The travelator, installed about six years ago, is about 30m long and 60cm wide with no handrail, and visitors reported the belt shakes, with a regular customer saying `Even as an adult, there are times when I think, 'It's a little scary'`.
