James Bulger's mum to hear voice of son's killer as Jon Venables makes new bid for freedom

On Tuesday, the Parole Board granted a hearing for Jon Venables, and Denise Fergus will observe it next month, with his face obscured to protect his identity.
Parole judges said they had reviewed written submissions from prison workers, psychiatrists, counsellors and family impact statements, and victim access reforms in April allowed Denise Fergus to attend.
Venables' criminal record shows repeated recalls after his 2001 release; he admitted possessing abusive videos and a 'paedophile manual' in 2018, cited by Mr Justice Edis at the Old Bailey.
Denise Fergus will be able to hear Venables speak for the first time in over 30 years, and her victim impact statement is expected to be read aloud, spokeswoman Kym Morris said.
A 2023 Parole Board panel rejected Jon Venables' bid, stating, 'the panel was not satisfied that release at this point would be safe for the protection of the public,' after he missed his December 2023 appeal, leading to evidence being read in his absence.
