Jacket Worn by Freddie Mercury During Last Live Performance Goes up for Auction
The Jean Paul Gaultier jacket could fetch up to £150,000, with letters from AIDS-related groups and Barbara Valentin’s daughter included in the sale.
A cropped leather jacket worn by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is heading to auction on Saturday in Devizes, Wiltshire. Auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son expect the Jean Paul Gaultier 1987/88 Rock Stars collection piece to fetch up to £150,000.
Mercury wore the jacket during a surprise 1988 charity performance at London's Dominion Theatre. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said it is an "extremely important part in the history of Freddie Mercury" as the star's final live singing performance before an audience.
The star appeared alongside Cliff Richard to support the Terrence Higgins Trust. During the set, Mercury sang "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll, In My Defence, Time, and duetted with Richard on It's In Every One Of Us."
Included in the sale are letters from AIDSTakeCare International and the daughter of actress Barbara Valentin, to whom Mercury had gifted the jacket. These documents provide provenance for the historic item.
Although Mercury performed later that year in Barcelona with Montserrat Caballe, that appearance was lip-synced. The singer died three years later, cementing the London gala as his final live singing performance.
