J&J posts trial win for psoriatic arthritis pill (JNJ:NYSE)

The 552-patient study found 58% of treated patients reached a 20% joint improvement after 16 weeks, Johnson & Johnson said.

  • On Saturday, Johnson & Johnson announced its once-daily oral pill Icotyde successfully eased symptoms in more patients with psoriatic arthritis than a placebo in a late-stage trial.
  • Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition causing pain, stiffness and swelling in joints. About 30% of patients with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, creating significant demand for effective treatment options.
  • In the 552-patient trial, 58% of patients taking Icotyde saw a 20% improvement in tender and swollen joint counts after 16 weeks, compared with 41% who received a placebo.
  • Johnson projects peak sales to top $5 billion for Icotyde, which faces competition from injectable biologics like AbbVie's Skyrizi and UCB's Bimzelx, as well as oral treatments Sotyktu and Otezla already on market.
  • David Lee, Johnson's global immunology head, told Reuters that "Patients don't want to be overtreated, they want a treatment that fits them where they're at," emphasizing Icotyde's oral convenience versus injectable alternatives.
