Public vote on which Wallace and Gromit character will be storm name
The public vote could add a Shaun the Sheep character to the 2026/27 storm list, after more than 50,000 suggestions were submitted last year.
On Wednesday, August 19, the Met Office opened a public vote to determine whether "Shaun" or "Timmy"—characters from animation studio Aardman—will join the official 2026/27 storm names list.
This collaboration celebrates Aardman's 50th anniversary ahead of the September 18 cinema release of 'Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom'. Amy Pearson, Director of brand marketing and PR at Aardman, called the partnership a "fun and meaningful way" to connect with the public.
Met Office Head of Warnings and Guidance Holly Clements said naming storms "helps our weather warnings reach more people and encourages the public to take notice" when severe weather approaches. The agency develops the annual list with Ireland's Met Éireann and the Dutch KNMI.
Voting remains open until 11 a.m. on Friday, August 21, with the winning character scheduled for announcement on September 1. However, there is no guarantee the chosen name will be used, as the Met Office assigns names alphabetically throughout each storm season.
Last year, the public submitted more than 50,000 suggestions, with 21 names chosen. While humorous monikers like "Stormy McStormFace" failed to make the cut, the alphabet system remains a constraint; the Met Office has only reached the letter L, with 2024's Storm Lilian.
