Italy Hit with Tsunami Alert Amid Mass Evacuation Following Huge Earthquakes
Authorities ordered evacuations and building checks after 12 quakes, including a magnitude 5.7 shock, struck the Tyrrhenian Sea.
On Friday, Italy's national tsunami warning system issued an orange advisory for coastal areas following a series of earthquakes in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily.
At least 12 quakes struck the Tyrrhenian Sea on Friday, including a magnitude 5.7 tremor and a magnitude 4.9 quake earlier that morning, according to the USGS and National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
The epicenters of the two strongest quakes were about 5 miles apart and about 6 miles below the surface, located about 33 miles north of Leni and less than 60 miles from Palermo.
Schools in Palermo and Messina were evacuated as a precaution, while Salvo Cocina, head of the Sicilian Civil Protection, ordered an immediate state of alert for affected municipalities.
Officials reported no injuries or structural damage as of Friday, though the advisory remains active with authorities urging residents to stay out of the water and avoid boating.
Several earthquakes hit the south of the Tyrrhenian Sea on Friday. Among the people there was great fear, which was further fired by a tsunami warning.
