Israel's Eisenkot Rules Out Netanyahu Coalition Even Under US Pressure
The bloc’s five leaders said their parties will recommend Eisenkot for the first mandate as they seek a Zionist unity government.
Yashar party chairman Gadi Eisenkot ruled out joining a government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, stating he would refuse even if President Donald Trump personally requested it.
The 61-seat threshold remains unmet following the recent election, as Likud finished with 27 seats against Yashar's 21. Netanyahu's bloc controls 53 seats, while opposition parties hold 48.
During a 70-minute gathering in Herzliya on Tuesday, opposition leaders agreed to recommend Eisenkot to President Isaac Herzog to form a 'change government.' The coalition intends to replace what they called the 'October 7 government.'
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Lieberman ruled out cooperation with Arab parties, replying 'yes' when Democrats chairman Yair Golan questioned if the decision was final. Lieberman confirmed his backing for Eisenkot to receive the mandate.
Final election results are due to be presented to President Isaac Herzog on November 4, after which he will begin official consultations with every party that won seats. Leaders plan to settle on their preferred candidate by Sunday or Monday before the 26th Knesset swearing-in.
