Israel to Supply Cyprus with an Offshore Patrol Vessel Equipped with Advanced Naval Systems
The €150 million deal will add a Rafael-equipped vessel and upgrade the Ioannides to expand patrol and search-and-rescue missions.
- On Monday, the Cypriot Defense Ministry and Israel's Ministry of Defense signed an agreement for a new offshore patrol vessel, to be constructed by Israel Shipyards with naval systems supplied by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems.
- The agreement also includes upgrading systems on the existing OPV Ioannides, Cyprus's first Israeli-built offshore patrol vessel, deepening defense ties to address regional maritime security challenges.
- Acting Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Defense Ministry Stelios Kountouris and IMOD Director General Maj.-Gen. Amir Baram signed the contract, which reports suggest is worth approximately $100 million.
- Operating together, the new vessel and the upgraded Ioannides will support expanded patrol, surveillance, and search-and-rescue missions; Israel described the agreement as "a step towards stronger defence cooperation and regional stability."
- Separately, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas confirmed an agreement with a Greek company to upgrade the naval base at Mari, aiming to accommodate at least eight Allied warships by next spring.
