Israeli officials of the far right are calling for control over the complex, a measure that could create a precedent regarding the status of the territories of the West Bank.
Israel is threatening to seize the medieval Solomon's Pools near Bethlehem, which are owned by the Palestinians under a 30-year-old agreement. Far-right Israeli politicians say the pools are historically significant to the Jewish state and are poorly maintained by the Palestinians. However, further expansion of Israeli influence in the West Bank would escalate already tense relations.
