Israeli-Turkish tensions continue to grow as Ankara prepares to launch new flotilla
Diplomatic officials are working behind the scenes to defuse tensions, and Israel is currently utilizing diplomatic channels with Turkey to try to prevent the flotilla from setting sail.
Turkey is preparing to launch a new flotilla to attempt to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday that 20 boats will participate in the operation. This is the first time there has been a real fear of an armed clash between the two sides, media reports warn.
Following the "Somod" flotilla, which attempted to enter the Gaza Strip and was stopped by IDF forces last week, the Navy is now preparing for a similar operation. If it were to happen now, it is possible that the activists arriving from Turkey would carry weapons with them, which would put the soldiers in danger. The "order from above" for the activists has not yet arrived.
After the IDF stopped the flotilla from Sicily far from the coast of Israel, a flotilla of 20 vessels is expected to set off towards Gaza. Israel fears that an attempt to stop it will lead to friction with the Turkish Navy.
