Germany, Israel Condemn Peruvian Leader's Anti-Semitic Remarks
Israel, Germany and Peru’s Jewish community condemned the remarks and demanded a retraction and formal apology.
- On Tuesday, Peruvian President José Balcázar sparked outrage during a speech at the Chamber of Commerce of Lima, claiming Jews were responsible for "pushing" Germany into war through control of banks and commerce.
- Balcázar, a left-wing nationalist who assumed the presidency in early 2026, cited a book by Antonio Escohotado titled Los Enemigos del Comercio during his address, despite facing prior criminal investigations.
- The Embassy of Israel and the Embassy of the Federal Republic condemned the claims as "absurd, historically untenable," violating the memory of 6 million German Jewish citizens murdered by Nazis.
- Following the condemnations, the Presidency issued a statement expressing regret for the "mistaken perception" generated by the remarks, while AJP demanded a prompt public apology from the president.
- Peru maintains that Nazi fanaticism caused the Second World War and the genocide of Jewish people; this historic position, which led the country to support Israel's creation, remains unchanged.
