Islamabad court grants five-day remand of suspect in Laiba suicide case
Police said the suspect used fake admission and visa documents and allegedly took Rs9.3 million from the family before the student’s death.
On Monday, an Islamabad District and Sessions Court remanded Muhammad Noman into police custody for five days in connection with the death of International Islamic University Islamabad graduate Laiba Ijaz following an alleged visa fraud case.
Noman allegedly deceived Ijaz by promising a Harvard University scholarship and using ChatGPT to impersonate a woman named Aiza and her brother during visa negotiations, police sources revealed.
Ijaz was found dead in Sector G-10 on Friday, October 9, after her family reportedly paid Rs9.3 million for the fraudulent visa process, selling property and jewellery to fund her dream.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to initiate investigations, while the Federal Investigation Agency traces the money trail and examines digital evidence from the victim's phone and laptop.
Investigators suspect Noman may have defrauded other women and are reviewing deleted data from his mobile phone; the case follows two other incidents in Pakistan involving AI chatbots, including poisoning and murder plot investigations.
