Iraq parliament fills Cabinet posts, naming a US-sanctioned deputy prime minister
Lawmakers approved 11 portfolios and three deputy prime ministers, while postponing the migration and displacement vote amid party disputes.
- On Thursday, Iraq's parliament approved 11 cabinet portfolios, completing the government formation for Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi after the administration took office five months ago with key positions vacant.
- Positions had been vacant since Zaidi's government took office in May. Lawmakers also approved three deputy prime ministers, including Laith al-Khazali, a senior leader of the Iran-backed Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement.
- Earlier on Thursday, lawmakers rejected the creation of deputy prime minister posts and new ministries, citing partisan quota-sharing. The US designated Asaib Ahl al-Haq a foreign terrorist organization in 2020.
- Nayef al-Shammari and Yasir al-Maliki were appointed defense and interior ministers, respectively. Zaidi's government programme pledged economic reforms, anti-corruption measures, and efforts to strengthen state institutions.
- Parliament postponed votes on the nominee for migration and displacement minister due to disagreement among parties. The administration faces challenges in tackling endemic corruption and bringing Iran-allied armed groups under state control.
