Iran Appears to Have Released Greek Tanker St. Nikolas Seized in 2024, Vessel Monitoring Service Says
The Greek-owned tanker St. Nikolas was held for about two years after Iran seized it in retaliation for a U.S. oil confiscation, amid rising U.S.-Iran tensions.
- Earlier this week, Iran appears to have quietly released the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greek-owned tanker St. Nikolas after holding it for approximately two years, TankerTrackers reported.
- In a tit-for-tat reaction, Tehran seized St. Nikolas after the U.S. seizure of about 500 barrels of Iranian oil, reports suggest.
- At the time of its capture the tanker was en route to the Turkish port of Aliaga after loading crude from the Iraqi Basrah Oil Terminal, and Empire Navigation, Greece-based vessel manager, did not immediately respond to queries.
- The apparent release coincided with a fresh flare-up in U.S.–Iran tensions, as President Donald Trump said earlier this week the United States is considering `very strong options` and Iran now seeks negotiation.
- Protests inside Iran have left over 500 people estimated dead and thousands arrested, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned `in the case of an attack on Iran, the occupied territories as well as all U.S. bases and ships will be our legitimate target.
