Iran says Iraq exempt from any Strait of Hormuz restrictions
- On Saturday, Iran's military command announced that "brotherly Iraq" is exempt from Strait of Hormuz shipping restrictions. Iraq's state oil marketer, SOMO, immediately requested buyers submit lifting schedules within 24 hours.
- Iran imposed an effective blockade on February 28, forcing Iraqi oil exports to plunge roughly 97% to a daily average of 99,000 barrels in March. The OPEC member relied on limited northern pipeline routes through Turkey.
- The exemption has the potential to unleash as much as 3 million barrels a day of Iraqi oil cargoes. SOMO reaffirmed that the Basrah Oil Terminal and associated facilities remain fully operational and ready to execute all contractual programs.
- Despite the exemption, energy expert Asim Jihad cautioned that risk aversion among global shipping firms remains the primary barrier. "Transit permissions do not guarantee a safe, secure shipping environment," Jihad said.
- President Donald Trump previously threatened that "all hell" would rain down within 48 hours if Iran failed to relinquish control. Meanwhile, Brent crude prices hover above $109 a barrel amid escalating regional tensions.
