Arrests, Hangings, Blackout: Iran Cranks up Wartime Repression
Authorities have arrested more than 50,000 people and executed at least 10 political prisoners as they broaden penalties for dissent, human rights groups said.
- Despite a fragile two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States, the Islamic Republic regime continues intensifying its crackdown on dissent, targeting protesters and critics both inside the country and across its global diaspora.
- Security forces arrested more than 50,000 people across the country, according to the Human Rights News Agency , while at least 6,488 protesters were killed during suppressed demonstrations late last year.
- The regime executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, marking the highest toll since 1989, while judiciary officials seized assets of more than 400 journalists and artists abroad for allegedly supporting "hostile foreign actors."
- London-Based Iranian journalist Shiva told ABC News on Wednesday she remains "extremely worried" about her family and imprisoned protesters whose voices are being silenced despite receiving direct threats and being labeled a "traitor."
- Dissident activist Zia Nabavi wrote on Instagram that the cycle of executions and war remains "life-killing," arguing that new regimes do not change the fundamental nature of the state's tyranny.
