Iowa sacrifices, commitments played a part in America's efforts to win World War II

An expedition led by Paul G. Allen’s Research Vessel Petrel found the cruiser’s wreckage after 700 crew members died in 1942, officials said.

The first U.S. forces to set foot on European soil during World War II were part of a Waterloo-based unit. Waterloo was named an American World War II Heritage City.
