Inside the GOP border security feud derailing Trump’s agenda in Congress
A narrow GOP majority lets a few hardliners block floor action after Johnson delayed a border-security bill, freezing other major legislation, Republicans said.
Speaker Mike Johnson faces a governing crisis as narrow House margins allow just two or three GOP members to seize control of the floor and repeatedly derail his legislative agenda, including a stalled border security bill.
Hardliners led by Rep. Chip Roy block floor action demanding votes on border security, while Rep. Anna Paulina Luna refuses to unjam the floor until an elections overhaul advances and center-right Republicans seek immigration reform pathways.
Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska blamed "far-right agitators" for freezing the floor, while House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers fumed, "Leadership needs to give those attention divas a little attention." That's what they do repeatedly, Rogers said.
Major agenda items including a Pentagon policy bill and appropriations bills remain in limbo. Rogers warned that hardliner floor antics will persist "from now until the end of this Congress."
With midterm elections approaching and President Donald Trump pushing his agenda before a possible change in congressional control, Republicans fear for their political future yet told CNN there is "no appetite to replace their party leaders.
