Inside one of the world's few crash courses in conserving and caring for ancient papyrus manuscripts

The only program of its kind in the Americas trains papyrologists and conservators to protect fragile manuscripts that have not been read for centuries.

  • Nine scholars from across the globe gathered in Ann Arbor for the 10-day Papyrus Conservation Summer Seminar at the University of Michigan, the only program of its kind in the Americas.
  • Michigan's Papyrology Collection was established by Latin professor Francis Willey Kelsey, with manuscripts acquired during university expeditions to Karanis, Egypt, between 1924 and 1935; the Kelsey Museum now holds one of the finest compilations of Greco-Roman Egypt objects outside of Cairo.
  • Preservation manager Marieka Kaye and curator Giuliano Sidro guide students in removing debris and realigning fibers using controlled moisture. Sidro said, "If we dont train the next generations of conservators, this is a craft that is going to be lost."
  • Scholars including Arzak Mohamed, a postdoctoral fellow at Macquarie University in Sydney, study ancient texts like The Odyssey and The Iliad, aiming to transfer conservation knowledge to Egypt and Australia. Mohamed said, "I will be like the chain, connecting between the three countries."
  • Since launching in 2012, the seminar has trained about 50 students through biennial sessions, except during the 2020 pandemic year. The program ensures these ancient manuscripts, some unread for thousands of years, remain accessible for future researchers making discoveries within Michigan's vaults.
