Indonesia’s first giant panda cub, Rio, is growing and healthy before his public debut
Veterinarians say Rio weighs 10 kilograms and is eating bamboo shoots as officials prepare him to meet visitors.
Indonesia's first giant panda cub, Satrio Wiratama , is preparing for his public debut at Indonesian Safari Park later this month, with veterinarians confirming the 169-day-old cub is healthy and growing.
Rio was born on November 27 to parents Hu Chun and Cai Tao, both 15 years old, following their 2017 arrival from China on a 10-year conservation partnership with Indonesia.
Weighing 10 kilograms, Rio has begun walking independently, climbing on his mother, and sampling bamboo shoots while residing in the three-tier Panda Palace equipped with specialized facilities.
Veterinarian Bongot Huaso Mulia stated, "What's important to note is that all of Rio's senses are active," enabling the cub to adapt to crowds while social media fans eagerly await his debut.
Taman Safari President Director Aswin Sumampau highlighted this success, noting no pandas were born at ex-situ conservation facilities worldwide in the past two years, symbolizing Indonesia and China's shared commitment to protecting endangered species.
