Indonesia rescues starved orangutan from fires: officials
- On Wednesday, officials from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency and Orangutan Foundation International rescued a starving female orangutan named Ira from a burned forest area in Central Kalimantan, Borneo.
- Indonesia has struggled for weeks to control forest fires that have razed parts of Sumatra, Borneo, and Papua, sending choking smog across borders to Malaysia and Singapore.
- Medical staffer Ichlasul Khaerul of OFI confirmed the orangutan was uninjured, though "seen from her abdominal circumference, probably the orangutan, Ira, was in the state of starvation," Ichlasul said.
- Local agency chief Muriansyah said, "We strongly suspect that the orangutan was looking for food," as Indonesia has rescued 232 wild animals, including 71 orangutans, as of October 8.
- The International Union for Conservation of Nature warned fires threaten habitats containing 52 percent of Borneo's orangutan population, where numbers have fallen to around 104,000 from more than 230,000 a century ago.
