Indonesia probes alleged luxury facilities for inmates at West Java prison
Authorities say inmates occupied at least 10 houses with air-conditioning, TVs and a gym, and one prisoner paid Rp 160,000 a week for access.
- On Wednesday, the Indonesian Ombudsman raided Cibinong Penitentiary, discovering a cluster of luxury residences occupied by inmates. The raid led to the suspension of five prison officials and revealed units equipped with air-conditioning, televisions, and refrigerators.
- Located behind the prison chief's official residence, the cluster contained around 13 units ostensibly intended for prison officers but occupied by inmates. The complex also featured a gym, golf simulator, and parking areas filled with luxury cars.
- Inmates allegedly paid Rp 160,000 weekly for facility access, according to the Ombudsman. Commissioner General Rudi Setiawan said 52 inmates had been questioned as of Sep 26, with inspections of 54 Cibinong Penitentiary staff scheduled.
- Ombudsman member Syafrida Rasahan demanded the Immigration and Corrections Ministry launch an immediate, thorough evaluation of irregularities. Authorities are investigating allegations, including a photograph found near a locked unit where one inmate had barricaded himself.
- These findings renew concerns regarding entrenched corruption within the Indonesian prison system. The government recently initiated retraining for more than 1,000 prison guards at Nusakambangan to address systemic scandals and improve operational standards.
