Pope 'Saddened' by Devastation in Indonesia Following Earthquake
- A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara region on Saturday, hitting the island of Flores and triggering numerous aftershocks throughout the day.
- The provisional death toll stands at 53, with 135 people injured and 13,000 left homeless. Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency reported more than 900 homes destroyed and 450 damaged.
- Several hours later, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the island of Sumatra, compounding the regional crisis. Thousands of displaced people have since sought shelter in temporary accommodation.
- Vatican News Pope Leo XIV expressed he was "deeply saddened" by the "devastation" in a telegram to Archbishop Paulus Budi Kleden, SVD, of Ende. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin signed the message.
- The Pope encourages authorities "as they continue to provide humanitarian assistance" and prays for recovery personnel. He also commends the deceased "to the loving mercy of Almighty God," invoking divine blessings of consolation and strength.
