India, Afghanistan Joint Working Group reviews measures to strengthen bilateral trade, economic cooperation
The two sides agreed to expand customs, data-sharing and regulatory cooperation to deepen trade ties and improve connectivity, the Commerce Ministry said.
- On Tuesday, the India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group on Trade, Commerce and Investment held a virtual meeting to review measures to facilitate trade and deepen commercial engagement between the two countries.
- The latest virtual session builds on ongoing economic engagement, following the fourth round of the Joint Committee Meeting held in New Delhi in July to review broader bilateral development partnerships.
- Officials focused on key areas including customs cooperation, pharmaceutical and agricultural trade, energy, and visa facilitation for Afghan traders to improve connectivity and promote business-to-business engagement.
- Official data shows total trade stood at USD 907.85 million in 2025-26, with exports at USD 253.63 million and imports at USD 654.22 million; India accounted for 0.06 per cent of Afghan exports.
- Reaffirming their commitment, representatives agreed to maintain continued engagement on trade, commerce and investment ties, as India reiterated support for the welfare and development needs of the Afghan people.
