Republicans Are Flooding Senate Races with ad Money, but Paying a Premium
Republicans spent $233 million on broadcast ads in nine battleground races, but Democrats got about 40% more rating points, AdImpact data showed.
- In nine competitive Senate races last month, Republicans outspent Democrats by nearly 100%, spending $233 million to $121 million, yet achieved only about 40% more Gross Rating Points, or GRPs.
- Republicans rely heavily on outside groups like super PACs paying elevated rates for late-cycle ad buys, while Democrats prioritize candidate-coordinated campaigns securing cheaper inventory booked earlier in the election cycle.
- In North Carolina, Republicans outspent Democrats by about $17 million to $14 million in September, yet Democrats secured more than 71,000 GRPs versus about 58,000 for Republicans. Maine showed identical inefficiency for Republicans.
- Recognizing financial inefficiency, Republicans began cutting remaining ad bookings by about $15 million in early October. A Supreme Court ruling now allows national committees to access candidate rates through coordinated buys.
- Veteran Republican strategist John Thomas noted that the "shock and awe" of massive spending often fails to translate to ground-level impact in Senate races. This efficiency gap may determine outcomes in the final stretch.
