On December 27, 1935, ten U.S. military bombers dropped 40 bombs on an active lava flow from the Mauna Loa in Hawaii. The operation targeted the channels that fed the flow to the city of Hilo. It was overseen by Lieutenant-Colonel George S. Patton, who later commanded the Third Army during the Second World War.
