IMMERSIVE XR EXPERIENCE EXPANDS THE REACH OF HOLOCAUST EDUCATION
The mixed-reality project uses survivor testimony and archival material to reach younger audiences and counter antisemitism, officials said.
On Wednesday, the Claims Conference launched "Benno's Light," an immersive mixed-reality project sharing the Holocaust survival story of 98-year-old Benno Kern through VR headsets and personal computers.
Building on the 2024 "Inside Kristallnacht" project, this initiative utilizes advanced technology to ensure the lessons of the Shoah remain meaningful. Gideon Taylor, President of the Claims Conference, said, "Mixed reality is the technology of now and of the future."
Kern recounts his life in Vienna, the family's flight to Paris, and their capture by Nazis before deportation to Auschwitz. Nicolas Rajabaly, Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of makemepulse, noted the project focuses on "emotional proximity, presence and human connection."
Launched at the University of Vienna, the initiative was developed in partnership with the Austrian Federal Chancellery. State Secretary Alexander Prüll said innovative projects show how technology "strengthen remembrance by bringing survivor testimony into new educational spaces."
As the sole family survivor, Kern urged future generations to carry his story forward, saying, "You have the opportunity to stay alive." Remembering the Shoah demands defending human dignity and democratic values against antisemitism and hatred.
