Imaan, Husband Rearrested After SC Bail
The Supreme Court suspended their sentences, but police rearrested the pair hours later and an Islamabad anti-terrorism court ordered 14 days' judicial remand.
- On Thursday, human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha were re-arrested just hours after the Supreme Court of Pakistan suspended their sentences and ordered their release.
- The pair had served nearly eight months in detention following their January 2026 sentencing under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act for social media posts critical of authorities.
- Police took Imaan and Chattha into custody at 9:30 p.m. inside Adila Jail, Rawalpindi while their release paperwork was being processed, citing allegations of chanting "anti-government slogans."
- Rejecting a request for 30 days of physical remand, anti-terrorism court judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain ordered the lawyers into 14 days of judicial custody instead.
- Amnesty International Deputy Regional Director Babu Ram Pant condemned the re-arrest as a "politically motivated attempt" to punish the lawyers for their human rights work.
