'I'm lucky to be alive': Georgia firefighter loses longtime home to wildfire
Lucky, a firefighter for 11 years, is living in an RV with her fiancé and three dogs after losing her uninsured home.
A wildfire in Brantley County scorched 22,471 acres and destroyed the longtime home of a firefighter known as Lucky, with the blaze 85% contained by Tuesday night.
Lucky, who has served as a firefighter for 11 years, spent the blaze's first night on the front lines before health and breathing problems forced her to withdraw from the fire.
Without homeowners' insurance, Lucky now relies on donations and lives in an RV on her property with her fiancé and three dogs. She struggles to sleep, saying, "I jump up every hour just to walk outside and see if it ain't on fire."
Recovery organizer Tonya Tomanek is coordinating cleanup equipment and securing RVs for displaced families from out-of-state partners. She has assisted about a dozen people so far, pivoting from emergency aid to debris removal.
Waynesville Missionary Baptist Church continues providing donations as short-term shelters scale back. Residents sift through debris, discovering remnants like wheat pennies from 1907, symbols of resilience amid ongoing recovery.
